This fall, we partnered with The Diatribe to launch Connect, Create, & Innovate, an initiative that merged technology with the arts. Each participant received their own iPad, allowing them to attend online sessions from the comfort of home. Throughout the sessions, participants connected with instructors from The Diatribe and explored the power of creative writing.
“The writing workshop with MOKA was an absolute joy! Participants were able to share honest and vulnerable stories in a safe and encouraging space, which was incredibly inspiring to experience,” said Shayna Smalls, one of The Diatribe’s teaching artists. “They each brought a unique perspective, and although I was the teacher, I feel like I learned SO MUCH from them!”
At the final session, we hosted an in-person showcase where several participants shared their work. Their writing, delivered from the heart, took many forms. One participant used her voice to reflect on past experiences and their impact. Another drew connections to the life of a well-known person with disabilities. A third blended his creative writing with a passion for drumming, delivering a performance that energized the audience. This led to a fun, interactive moment where we followed the rhythm of the drums, shouting positive affirmations like “I am powerful!” “I am unique!” and “I am important!”
These sessions profoundly impacted the participants, equipping them with tools to recognize and express their emotions. They also gained valuable experience with technology, learning to navigate their iPads—a resource for connection and creation that will benefit them long after the course concluded.
This project is made possible through a grant awarded to MSU IMPART Alliance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services using American Rescue Plan Act/Home and Community Based Services Spending Plan funds. Fueled by IMPART’s generous support, this project sought to connect us with even more people in our community. In addition to those from MOKA, we were thrilled to welcome participants from Spectrum Community Services.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to The Diatribe, Impart Alliance, and the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition for their partnership in this exciting endeavor. Stay tuned as we continue to work with partners to explore the transformative impact of technology in the lives of those we serve.
